“This will be the third annual celebration of its kind in Moab, a tradition that has grown with interest and participation from peoples of all cultural backgrounds,” MVMC officials said in a news release.
2010 marks a very special year for Mexicans across the world: the commemoration of 200 years of Independence from Spanish rule and the 100-year anniversary of the revolution that began in 1910. Sept. 16 is the largest day of celebration in Mexico, and culminates with what is known as El Grito, or, “The Cry.”
The tradition dates back to 1810, when Mexican townspeople responded to the ringing of church bells with a fiery cry that triggered the long struggle against the Spanish. That event is reenacted in every plaza or zócalo in Mexicao as a way of honoring the heroes of the independence.
“We often assume that May 5 marks the independence day of our southern neighbors when it actually pales in comparison to the true celebrations of independence that you find throughout Mexico on Sept. 16,” MVMC officials said.
The event is open to the entire community. The celebration will be held at Swanny Park from 5-9 p.m. and will feature traditional folkloric dancing, Moab’s own Mexican-American band K-los, DJ Erick, and a selection of delicious homemade Mexican food.
There will be no cost for entrance into the event.
The MVMC is looking for volunteers to help with the event. Anyone interested in volunteering is asked to contact the center at 259-5444 or stop in at 156 North 100 West.
