The first three days of the camp were spent in the La Sal Mountains, where CFI naturalists and campers explored the alpine environment. The group spent those three days taking daily hikes to spectacular mountain vistas, playing games and participating in hands-on, educational activities that help the kids learn about the area while having fun in a safe environment, according to a news release from CFI.
Participants spent their nights in tents and experiencing a full camping experience, CFI officials said.
For some of the participants, the camp was their first time away from home and was designed to provide an introduction to the great outdoors, according to the news release. CFI programs are designed to impart an appreciation of the outdoors to the children through fun activities.
The group rounded out their camp experience with a raft trip on the Colorado River, starting near Fisher Towers at Hittle Bottom and ending at Rocky Rapid.
CFI will offer one last young explorer’s camp Aug. 24-27 for fourth- through sixth-graders.
The camps are made possible at a discount price because of grants from the Grand County Recreation Special Services District, WabiSabi Make a Difference, and other local businesses, according to the news release.
