Moab City Recreation’s youth softball and baseball leagues are wrapping up their regular season schedules this week, and several teams have already qualified for their leagues’ respective state tournaments.
On Monday night, June 28, in Fox softball league action (girls in grades 7-9), the Miguel’s Baja Grill Royals won their second game of the year, upsetting the High Point Hummer Red Sox by the score of 6-3. Amanda Sheets belted an inside-the-park home run to deep left field in the fourth inning to give the Royals a comfortable 5-1 lead.
Meantime, down at Blanding, the Blanding Yankees finished their season unbeaten by defeating the Fitzgerald Law Astros of Moab in both games of a doubleheader Monday night, said Moab City Recreation Director John Geiger.
Geiger said the Fox league will send three teams to the state tournament at Payson next week: the 12-0 Yankees will go as the No. 1 seed, while the Red Sox (who finished their season 6-6) will go as a No. 2 seed. The Astros tied with the Mega Blue Reds for third place in the Fox league, as both finished 5-7, but Gieger said the Reds will go to state as the No. 3 seed because they won their head-to-head tiebreaker against the Astros.
In the Filly softball league (girls in grades 5-6), the Arches Trading Post Braves outlasted the Mountain America Credit Union Indians on Monday by the score of 11-4. The Braves improved to 9-2 with the win, guaranteeing them a No. 1 seed at state next week. The Wendy’s A’s were 6-3 with two games left to play on Tuesday, June 29. The A’s will attend state in Spanish Fork and Springville next week as the No. 2 seed from Moab.
The Falcon softball league (girls in grades 3-4) also concluded its season play on Monday night, as the Moab Laundry Express Yankees defeated the Perpetual Images Pirates by the score of 9-5 (see related story). The Yankees finished with a record of 8-3-1 and will go to state next week as a No. 1 seed.
The Falcon state tournament is scheduled for July 6-8 in Salem. Moab’s second-place Falcon team, the Canyonlands Jeep Adventures Cardinals, finished with a 7-4-1 record and just missed qualifying for state.
In Pony league baseball action (boys in grades 7-8), the Monticello Red Sox improved their record to 10-0 by beating the Grand County Credit Union Diamondbacks of Moab in both games of a doubleheader.
The Red Sox won the first game 6-3 and had a 1-0 lead late in the second game, but Adam Jenkinson of the Diamondbacks hit a double in the bottom of the fifth inning, then scored on teammate Wade Kemmsies’ single to make it 1-1 with nobody out. But the Diamondbacks ended up stranding runners at second and third that inning, and weren’t able to take the lead. The Red Sox later scored three runs in the top of the seventh and final inning to pull ahead 4-1, then struck out the other side to end the game.
Despite the two losses, the Diamondbacks are still 6-5 with one game left to play, and are assured of the No. 2 seed at the state tournament July 12-14 in Utah County, Geiger said. The undefeated Red Sox had already secured their spot as the league’s No. 1 seed.
In the Pinto league (boys in grades 5-6), two of the league’s three teams are still vying for the league championship, which won’t be decided until later this week.
The Bowen Motel Angels defeated the Bates Fencing Padres 12-2 on Monday, June 28, putting the Angels in first place with a 7-4 overall record. But the Angels will still have to make it past the 6-4 Moab Lions Club Red Sox on Wednesday, June 30 in order to qualify for state. Only one team qualifies for state in the Pinto league, Geiger said.
Finally, in the four-team Mustang league (boys in grades 3-4), the Moab Brewery Brewers defeated the Arches Trading Post Dodgers 10-9 on Monday, June 28. The Brewers battled back from a 9-4 deficit to win the game, with Evan Tierney scoring the winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Brewers improved to 7-3 with one game left to play, just behind the Packard Wholesale Braves, who are 8-1 with two games remaining this week.
Both the Braves and the Brewers will represent Moab at the state tournament July 12-14, but the final placement of the two teams is yet to be determined, Geiger said.
