American legion Auxiliary, Unit No. 54 of Moab, is pleased to announce that Ivy Hazlett, daughter of Steve and Nicki Hazlett, is the 2008 delegate to Girls State. She will join other delegates from Utah high schools for the week-long session held on the campus of Southern Utah University in Cedar City.

The American Legion Auxiliary sponsors this program through out the United States, and each state holds their own session each summer. Auxiliary members provide the counselors and training at each Girls State session. Young women are taught the ideals and principals of the American system of government, and learn how to run and campaign for office, present and debate legislation, hold court, and make and enforce ordinances, in a "hands-on" manner.

Local contributors make it possible to send Moab girls to the program. This year's contributors include Moab Lions Club, Quintstar management Inc. (J.J. Wang), Ladies of Elk, Alpha Rho chapter of E.S.A., and Wells Fargo Bank (Don Cook). Parents of delegates assume the costs and responsibility for transportation.

Girls State delegates can apply for scholarships to SUU, may obtain three college credits upon completion of Girls State session, and, if the delegate is a direct descendant of a war time American veteran, she may apply for a Samsung scholarship.

Hazlett is a top student, takes advanced classes, sings and plays piano and guitar. She has performed in high school musicals, runs on the track team, works, and volunteers for various events, and assists in her church activities. She has said she wants to learn more about the American governmental system, and how she may become a better leader for tomorrow.
