The Moab Valley Multicultural Center has announced it will hold the first-ever "Festival of Cultures" during the first weekend of May 2008.

The event will celebrate the wide variety of cultures in the Four Corners region, and will seek to promote cultural sensitivity and appreciation of diverse cultural perspectives, organizers said. Activities will include a parade, local musicians and performers, ethnic food booths and cultural exhibits, a photo display at the Grand County Public Library, and educational speakers and films. The festival, which will be held on Center Street in Moab, will be free and open to the public.

Area citizens who are interested in volunteering for this event are invited to attend an informational meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 15 at 6 p.m. at the Moab Valley Multicultural Center, 115 W 200 South in the old city building across from the Utah State University.

The event will be partially funded by grants from the Utah Humanities Council, the Moab Area Travel Council, and the Moab Arts Council. Donations are welcome at any time, and MVMC staff and board members will be offering different levels of sponsorship for businesses and individuals.

For more information, call the MVMC at 435-259-5444. Because this is a first-time event, organizers say the group will need extra help.
