Former GCHS footballer to play in Poinsettia Bowl

    Former Grand County athlete Zane Taylor will be playing in the Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego on Thursday, Dec. 20 for the University of Utah. Taylor, a 6'3" 305 pound offensive lineman, is in his second year with the Ute football program, on full scholarship. He redshirted his first year and has played in seven games this year for the Utes. Taylor is the backup to the starting right guard and has a starting spot on the punt team.

    The Utes, 8-4 this season, will face a tough Navy team, also 8-4. The Utes have never played the Midshipmen in football before this game. Utah is playing in its fifth-straight bowl game. Utah's all-time bowl record is 9-3 and they have the second-longest current bowl win streak in the nation, with six straight wins dating back to 1999.

    Taylor, a 2006 GCHS graduate, was The Salt Lake Tribune 2A football MVP his senior year. He was also a three-time state heavyweight wrestling champion and shot put and discus champion. The Salt Lake Tribune also honored him as their male prep athlete of the year for 2005-2006.



    The Utes will fly to San Diego on the Sunday prior to the Thursday game and watch The San Diego Chargers play the Detroit Lions. The team will spend the the next few days practicing and touring the town before the game. The Poinsettia Bowl will be broadcast on ESPN at 7 p.m. MST. Taylor wears jersey No. 77 for the Utes.
