Upcoming events include:
Junior Archaeologist Program for visitors: School-age children visiting the Edge of the Cedars can now expand their museum experience with the Junior Archaeologist activity. Kids can ask for a visiting Junior Archaeologist activity booklet at the information desk. While touring the exhibits with their families, children can use the activity book to learn more about archaeology and the Ancestral Puebloan people who used to occupy the Edge of Cedars village. Students who complete the booklet will receive a Junior Archaeologist badge and a certificate. The Junior Archaeologist activity is free.
Art-N-Facts for kids after-school program: The after school program returns this fall, thanks to a grant from the Utah Division of State History. The program will meet on Tuesday afternoons from 3 - 5:45 p.m., from Sept.18 through Oct. 30. The program is targeted for children in grades fourth through seven, but older kids and parents are also welcome to attend.
The focus of the seven-week program is to teach kids about archaeology and museum curation through hands-on activities. Weekly activities include examining a set of artifacts, discussion about use, manufacture and the people who made them, and a creative art project to make and take home. One session will feature renowned Ute Mountain Ute musician, Aldean Ketchum, who will talk about his flute traditions and lead the students in making and playing their own instruments. Other special presenters include, Gregory Holiday, who will teach pottery-making, and Gregory Nunn, who will be demonstrating stone-tool manufacturing. Kids who attend four of the seven free sessions will qualify as Junior Archaeologists and may participate in a field trip the first Saturday in November.
Story of the Month: Keeping in mind that every artifact tells a story, Edge of the Cedars will present "Story of the Month," a mini-exhibit highlighting unique artifacts from the repository and the information they have to share.
Story-Hour: Small fry will enjoy another fall session of "Story Hour" with museum assistant, Nidia Jones. Beginning Thursday, Oct. 4, from 4-5 p.m., and continuing each week through the fall, Jones will read from children's classics. This program is targeted for pre-school through second-grade children but kids of all ages are welcome.
J. R. Lancaster Photography Workshop: One of the Southwest's most creative artists and photographers, Lancaster will teach students techniques to capture images of the region. This workshop will begin on Friday evening, Oct. 5 with a program at the museum. In addition to a back room tour, Lancaster will present an orientation slide program for workshop participants. On Oct. 6, the group will venture into the red rock country for field experience, instruction and imaging. On Oct. 7, students will visit Lancaster's studio to learn techniques and perhaps go back into the field. The workshop is for people of all skill levels. Both digital and film cameras welcome. Tuition cost is $175 and the workshop is a fundraising event to help pay for the museum's educational programs. Class size is limited to 15.
Blanding Chamber of Commerce Presents, "An Hour Well Spent: Fireside Talks:" This series is held at the Edge of the Cedars Museum every first and third Thursday of the month. The programs are held from 6-7 p.m. in the museum auditorium and are free ‒ a $2 donation is requested. Each program highlights the accomplishments of a unique individual from San Juan County or the Blanding community. Previous "Fireside Talks" have featured Robert Turk, Clayton Long, Kelly Pugh, and Kim Hiatt.
