Moab American Legion Auxiliary member named state president

    Debra Swafford, a member of American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 54, was installed as Auxiliary President, Department of Utah, at the 89th annual convention of The American Legion and Auxiliary, Department of Utah.

    American Legion Post and Auxiliary Unit 112 of South Salt Lake hosted the convention held in Kimball Junction in Park City, June 22-24.

    The opening session on Friday evening was a joint meeting with the Legion. The general session for the Auxiliary began Saturday morning with the advancement of Post National Presidents' flags by Betty Calder, a Post National President.

    Utah's Woman of the Year, Martha Coley of Ferron, Utah, Unit 42, was introduced at the luncheon on Saturday.

    Americanism President, Patti Murphy, Unit 54, announced the state winners of the Americanism essays.

    A memorial service for deceased Auxiliary members concluded the afternoon session. Department Chaplain, Marva Davis, conducted the memorial service.    

    A joint Legion and Auxiliary memorial and religious service conducted by Legion Chaplain, Byron Lewis and Auxiliary Chaplain Marva Davis, was held Sunday morning.

    The new Department of Utah Auxiliary officers for 2007-2008 were installed by Betty Calder, past national president. New officers are: Debra Swafford, president; Georgia Engelbrecht, first vice-president; Carolyn Randall, second vice-president; Linda Schwartz, chaplain; Donna Nielson, historian and Cary Fisher, N.E.C.

    Other officers were appointed by the new president. Members attending the convention from Unit 54, Moab, were Debra Swafford, Patti Murphy, Lois Jamison. Charlotte Upton-Pogue from Green River, Utah Unit 103, accompanied the Moab members.

    The main thought of the convention was "We support our troops and veterans."
