Former Grand County High baseball star Steven Hirschfeld, 21, now playing for San Diego State University, is now 3-1 as a starting pitcher for the Aztecs, thanks to a win over the UCLA Bruins last Friday, March 16.

The right-handed Hirschfeld, a 6-foot-5-inch, 215-pound junior, allowed just one run and two hits over five innings, striking out eight batters in the 8-2 victory.

Hirschfeld, who is majoring in criminal justice with a business minor, also pitched the Aztecs to a 3-1 victory over Pacific at Stockton, Calif. on March 1.

At Pacific, Hirschfeld had a no-hitter going at the end of five innings, with the only Pacific baserunner reaching first on a passed ball after a third strike. Hirschfeld allowed just one hit and one run in six innings in picking up his second win.

Hirschfeld, who graduated from GCHS in 2004, played two years of junior college at Community College of Southern Nevada in Las Vegas before transferring to SDSU. At CCSN, he had a 10-0 record in 14 starts, with a 1.62 earned run average.

Hirschfeld, who also played basketball and football for the Red Devils in high school, has been drafted twice by Major League Baseball teams: he was selected in the 29th round in 2004 by the Montreal Expos (now the Washington Nationals) and in the 25th round by the Colorado Rockies in 2005.        Hirschfeld is the son of Rick and Cindy Hirschfeld of Moab. The couple traveled to San Diego  recently to watch their son pitch at the Tony Gwynn 2007 Classic tournament. Against Oklahoma on March 9. Hirschfeld gave up a solo home run to the second batter of the game. Oklahoma ultimately won the game 4-1, Hirschfeld's only loss to date after six starting appearances.

The Aztecs are currently 13-11 overall but still have two more months left in their season. Next month, they'll visit Salt Lake City to play Mountain West Conference rival University of Utah in a three-game series April 13-15.
