The local Elks Club recognized two Grand County High School students as the 2004-05 Students of the Year during a year-end luncheon.

The faculty of GCHS chose Kimber Parry and Andrew Baker, who just completed their junior year, from juniors who had been named Student of the Month in the past. Parry was named GCHS Student of the Month in September 2004, while Baker received the honor in January 2005.

Both students were recognized as outstanding and are highly involved in activities. Parry recently returned from a trip to Costa Rica, where she and a half dozen other GCHS students studied the rain forest and assisted in protecting eggs laid on the beach by sea turtles. GCHS teachers Linda Kolb and Ed DeFrancia accom-panied the group. Parry is also involved with the Stars dance team this summer as an instructor and a participant. She will return to the GCHS drill team for her senior season in August.

Parry, who will also serve as president of the school’s Honor Society chapter, is planning a career in medicine.

Baker, the male Student of the Year, is one of the school’s top debaters, helping the team win the state championship in 2004 and the region title in 2005.

He is also an accomplished athlete, lettering in football all three years to date and being named to the all-region team last year. He has also played baseball and basketball for GCHS.

Baker was recently elected by his fellow students to serve as student body president in 2005-06. He has served as a peer mentor and helped design ads for a community anti-tobacco advertising campaign.

Parry and Baker each received a check for $50 from the local Elks Club at the luncheon. In addition to the ongoing Student of the Month program, the Elks sponsor a scholarship program for students of Grand and San Juan Counties. Parents do not need to belong to the Elks in order for their students to apply for the scholarships. Interested students should contact Joan Gough at GCHS for more information.
