Moab’s American Legion #54 Auxiliary has announced this year’s Girls State participants, who will join other Utah high school students in a week-long session in government.

Rebakah Keogh, daughter of James Keogh and Kathleen Daniels, and Heather Tolley, daughter of Joyce Young, are the two delegates who will travel to the campus of Southern Utah University at Cedar City in June. Girls State, sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, is a weeklong program that teaches and trains young women in the basic ideals and principles of the American system of government. The delegates develop “hands on” skills in running and campaigning for office, presenting and arguing bills, holding court serving as lawyers, juries and judges.

Girls can apply for a Girls State scholarship to S.U.U., may obtain credit for three college credits upon completing the Girls State session, and if a direct descendent of a veteran, may apply for a Samsung scholarship.

Unit #54 is very appreciative of the loyal contributors that make it possible for delegates to attend Girls State. Contributors include the Moab Lions Club, Ladies of ELK, Wells Fargo Bank, Zions Bank, Alpha Rho chapter of ESA sorority, Republican Women, and Canyon Country Publications. The delegates and parents assume the travel costs in getting the girls to Girls State.

Unit #54 is again holding a Girls State Tea on Saturday, April 30 at the Senior Center at 2 p.m. All delegates from District #5, their parents, and auxiliary members are invited to attend. More information will be given at the tea, and questions answered concerning Girls State. Any former delegates are also invited to attend.
