Brittnie Whipple threw back-to-back no-hitters for

the Grand County High School softball team last Friday, as the Lady

Devils defeated Gunnison 15-1 and 20-0.

Whipple, a junior, said she hadn’t planned on

pitching both games, but after striking out 10 batters over four

innings in the first game, the coaches asked her if she’d keep

pitching.

“By then, my arm was loosened up, and I actually

felt even better the second game,” said Whipple, who added that she has

pitched as many as five games in a day before.

Whipple struck out 13 batters in the second game,

which ended after five innings. Senior Shelly Welch was the catcher for

both games. Gunnison’s only run of the day came in the fourth inning of

the first game after a walk and a fielding error.

The Lady Devils had six hits in the first game and

13 in the second, with Mindy McElhaney, Courntey Wimmer, Michelle

Saggboy, and Whipple each recording doubles.

Earlier in the week, the Lady Devils lost 7-1 at San

Juan on Tuesday, March 28. Grand’s next scheduled games are a varsity

doubleheader at South Sevier this Friday, after which they’ll have a

week off for spring break.
