A few Castle Valley people have organized a book

club in the valley and have scheduled their next meeting for Tuesday,

Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. at the local library located in the town hall.

They have met at members' homes in the past but

decided to meet at the library to promote that facility. They have a

loose meeting schedule but meet periodically to discuss their current

book and decide on another. Currently about seven people join in on the

discussions but they would like to have a few more join them.

Their current book is “The Piano Tuner” by Daniel

Mason. One is available at the local library and another is in the Moab

library and there are a couple more around. Call the library for

details.

From the files of the Castle Valley Comments of 25

years ago, it was announced that the Castle Valley Fire Department lost

a fund raising basketball game to the Moab department. Moab won the

third annual game by a lopsided score of 11 to 22. The lineup for the

local team included Kevin McGann, Jim Oakden, Frank Mendonca, Ron

Young, Tom Young, Bill Bolin and John McGann. The proceeds from the

game went to purchase turnout gear for the Castle Valley Fire

Department.

Six Castle Valley teens took part in a skate-a-thon

in Moab to benefit the March of Dimes. Taking part were Tina Plastow,

Greg Glines, Colleen Glines, Shawn Pueblo, Anne Martin and Kris Johnson.

Two baby girls were born to Castle Valley residents

25 years ago. They were Tabitha Lyn born to Kent Officer, now of

Wyoming, and Debbie Officer of Castle Valley. Ken and Ruth Johnson of

Castle Valley are the maternal grandparents. A girl was also born to

Brent and Jackie Stucki. Brent is the son of Richard and Marge Stucki,

now of Springville, Ut.

Wednesday, Feb. 1, also marked the birthday of

Noelle Drogin, daughter of Ken and Alice Drogin of Castle Valley. She

turned 18 years old and is a senior at Grand County High School.

Twenty years ago this week, officials from the BLM

and Conoco Oil met with the community during a property owners

association meeting. They answered questions regarding a proposed

exploratory well that was to be drilled at the base of Parriott Mesa.

Residents raised concerns about the noise, lights and the chance of

escaping deadly gases.

The well was eventually approved and the drilling

was in full operation by March. Fifty truck loads were required to

transport the rig to the location just off the Loop road and it was in

operation 24 hours a day for about two and one half months. They

reportedly drilled to a depth of between 1,300 and 1,500 feet.

Ten years ago this month, Livi Kulander did

something that seasoned reporters can go their whole career without

doing. The 14 year-old Castle Valley youth interviewed Presidential

Candidate, Senator Bob Dole as the host of a kids radio show on KZMU

Radio. The program, Children’s Shine Time, ran every Saturday morning

and featured music and stories for children.
