County’s middle school population will begin on Tuesday, Nov. 8. The
Middle School After School Program, operating Tuesdays, Wednesdays and
Thursdays from 2:30 to 5 p.m., will provide enrolled students with
snacks and social time, individual and team homework assistance, and an
introduction to a variety of recreational, artistic, and group
activities aimed to be fun and educational. The program’s co-directors,
Sarah Bauman and Kristina Taylor, will be hosting a Parent Orientation
and Student Registration Night at the GCMS cafeteria on Thursday, Nov.
3 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. During the orientation, Bauman and Taylor will
provide parents with detailed program information, introduce parents
and students to the program staff, help parents register their child
for the six-week introductory session and review the program schedule
and program handbook.
The Middle School After School Program is part of a
larger after school and summer school program being created by the
Grand County School District. These new programs were made possible
when GCSD was awarded a grant in September by the 21st Century
Community Learning Center (CCLC) program. The 21st CCLC is a federal
program aimed to improve student academic performance and family life
through comprehensive after school, evening and summertime programming
for all members of the family. GCSD’s 21st Century Community
Learning Center is called BEACON (Building Essential Assets through
Community Outreach and Networking) and has a focus on middle
school-aged students. The BEACON program will start off small this
semester, serving 100 students in the district, with the goal of
serving 300 to 400 students per year in later years. The BEACON program
will be funded by the 21st CCLC program for up to five years if it
meets its landmark goals.
Additional BEACON programming will begin later in
the school year and during the summer months. All parents,
teachers, community members, students and public officials are invited
to learn more about the 21st Century Community Learning Center and its
Middle School After School Program by attending the orientation night
next week or by calling the program co-directors at 260-9439 or
260-9440.
