Moab Mayor Dave Sakrison reported last week that the average city taxes paid per Moab household is nearly half that paid by other city households in the state.

According to Sakrison, the per household state average is $450, which in most cities includes some amount of property tax distribution. Grand County’s property tax assessment does not include municipal contributions, so only gas ($78 per household) and sales taxes ($175 per household) make up city taxes. Together this amounts to about $253 per household, or 56.2 percent of the state average. Sakrison said heavy business license fees are the reason property taxes are not diverted to city coffers.

Based on 2003 rates of a median home value of $104,700, property taxes in Grand County were distributed accordingly: $158 to the county; $346 to the school district; $15 to the Grand County Special Service Water District; $34 Moab Valley Fire; $16 to mosquito abatement; and $12 to the Grand County Cemetery District.

Comparatively, total taxes paid in 2003-04, based on the median household income (in 2000) of $32,620, came to $7,496, or 22.9 percent. The single largest amount is paid to Social Security ($2,495), with federal income taxes that second largest amount ($1,797). Next is sales tax ($1,171); state income tax ($904); property tax ($584); and gas tax $545).
