The Moab Valley Multicultural Center (MVMC) this week moved to a new location at 156 North 100 West, between Rim Cyclery and the River Canyon Lodge, MVMC officials said in a news release.

“I think this is a good move for the center because the new building is much more inviting, visible to the public, and close to neighborhoods, the downtown, the new [kindergarten through sixth-grade] school and Swanny Park,” said board member Gentry Medrano. “MVMC staff is thrilled to be able to provide such a warm welcoming space, an outdoor patio and yard for educational programs, and a community garden.”

MVMC’s new location is the former home of Mitch and Mary Williams.

Donations by several local businesses and individuals and the efforts of volunteers made the move and the renovation of the new building possible, according to the news release.

Area businesses and community members have provided “critical contributions” to support MVMC’s growing programs and services for 2010 to be offered at the new site, said the center’s director, Sarah Heffron.

Current programming includes family literacy (adult English language classes, after-school tutoring, parenting classes and the opportunity for parents and children to spend time together, and a summer literacy camp), bilingual support and family resources, multicultural programming for the public and schools, Native American Club, Amigos Club, and Spanish classes, according to the news release.

At the beginning of the year, MVMC signed a two-year lease for the new building with the Texas-based landlords. Recently, the center secured a purchase contract for the site.

“We believe MVMC plays an essential role in bringing together and meeting the needs of our increasingly diverse community,” Heffron said. “The new center is in an ideal location to do this. Purchasing not only secures this permanent home and protects our investments, it helps sustain the organization for the long term by helping put the control of monthly expenses in our hands.”

MVMC, a non-profit group, was founded more than three years ago to promote intercultural understanding and help broaden opportunities for Latino, Native American, and other minorities through education, family support and community collaboration.

MVMC will now be open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
