The Mayor of Moab city and the faculty and staff of Helen M. Knight Intermediate School have named Sidney Shumway as the recipient of the Mayor’s Citizenship Award for May.

Shumway, a fifth-grader, is the son of Jared and Liz Shumway.  HMK Staff said Shumway was chosen for the award, in part, because he “stays with his assignments and is a strong thinker in math.”  Staff members said Shumway “provides a good role model in work ethics,” and that “not everything comes easy to him, but that he will see it through until it’s completed.”  He is described as a student who “enjoys being around others and is an active participant in lessons.”

Moab Mayor Dave Sakrison and the Moab City Council presented the award to Shumway at the May 25 Moab City Council meeting.

The HMK Students of the Month are selected by the faculty and staff of the school based on their all-around citizenship and their involvement within their school. The city of Moab presents the award as part of an ongoing effort to foster and recognize the contributions of young people within the community in practicing good citizenship.
